On July 1, 1867, the British North America Act laid the foundation for Canadian Confederation. Beginning in the 1920s, Canada developed its autonomous foreign policy.

The first Canadian mission in Germany was established in 1949, when Lieutenant-General Maurice Arthur Pope was appointed Canada's representative to the Inter-Allied High Commission.

The Honourable Davis Thomas Clayton became Canada's first ambassador to Germany on July 12, 1950. He held his post in Bonn, the former seat of the West German government.
