Following the bombings that marked the end of the Second World War, Leipziger Platz was left in ruins. With the division of Germany by the Allies, these ruins were cleared, but the octagon was not rebuilt.

From 1961 to 1989, the Berlin Wall separated Leipziger Platz from Potsdamer Platz. Leipziger Platz, in the east, found itself located directly in the militarized zone between the outer wall and the background wall.
